RAMPS
Ramps come in all shapes and sizes, often being used in the home the garden, or out and about to get in and out of cars. One useful feature of the many of the ramps available is the ability to telescopically reduce in size. This enables the ramps to be transported more easily. Many of these ramps are suitable for packing into the car, but can extend to three times their normal length when fully assembled. For a sturdier ramp, broad ramps are often the solution. These usually come in fixed widths and lengths.
Why Do I Need A Mobility Ramp?
Mobility ramps can help you to put your scooter, power chair or wheelchair into a car boot. They can help overcome small indoor steps, as well as larger flights of steps outside.
What Sort Of Ramps Are Available? Vehicle ramps help you to put your mobility scooter, power chair or wheelchair into a car boot. Channel ramps are designed more for 4 wheels as they are in-line and can easily be guided up the channels. Broad ramps are ideal for mobility chairs that have 3 or less wheels as they are not in – line and would need a wider ramp. Indoor threshold ramps are for overcoming small steps in the home, or at work. Outdoor ramps can overcome steps and can be fitted with either one or two handrails. These can be permanent ramps or portable ramps. If the ramp installation is permanent then a fibreglass ramp with a handrail would be more appropriate.
How Long Does My Ramp Need To Be? If you are looking to buy a mobility ramp for your scooter, power chair or wheelchair, remember that the maximum slope for a wheelchair ramp should be 1" rise for every 12" of length (4.8° angle, or 8.3% gradient). For a mobility scooter or power chair this is 1.5" rise for 12" length (7.1° or 12.5% gradient).
Batteries
Battery life When you first install your new battery, place it on charge for at least 24 hours. Always keep your battery on trickle charge between uses and if your vehicle is stored for any length of time, firstly charge fully then disconnect your batteries.
Charging Battery technology has changed considerably over recent years. Batteries today, especially gel/sealed batteries, offer more power for their size and provide longer performance. Try wherever possible to fully cycle your battery before charging and then fully charge before re-use. Always use the correct charging system for the batteries in use.
Battery Life Your battery will wear out with age or frequency of use, as the battery gets older your scooter will travel slower or shorter distances. If you use your scooter very regularly then the battery will obviously wear out faster.
Distance The distance you can expect from fully charged batteries will be greatly influenced by weight and terrain.
How Often Should You Charge Daily users - charge daily as soon as you are done using it. Your scooter will be ready each morning to give you a full day’s service. If you use your scooter infrequently (once a week or less), charge the batteries once a week for 12 to 14 hours.
Battery Storage Store batteries fully charged. Check once a month and recharge as needed. Wet batteries can hold their charge up to three months, sealed models six to twelve months. |
